Should I Be A Stay at Home Mom or Work?
Giving up work to be a stay-at-home mom (SAHM) or a stay-at-home Dad (SAHD) is often a tough, but very much a personal decision. There is no right or wrong answer here, but there are a lot of considerations that will help you in making this very important decision.
When I was pregnant with my first child, I was working full-time, but I didn’t have a long-term plan as to whether I would stay at my job. My job at that time was in the non-profit sector and it paid very little, and my job was pretty stressful on top of things. While we needed the money, my salary wasn’t all that much, so my husband and I decided that it would be a good idea to stay at home after my daughter was born. Once my precious girl was born, I knew that I had made the right decision for me. I emphasize the “for me” part, because everyone is different and has different priorities. I would never judge another mom for choosing to go back to work.
I continued to stay at home until I received a call from a previous employer who wanted me to come back to work for them (it had been several years since I worked there). By this time, I didn’t really want to work full time. They convinced me to come in and we worked out a deal where I could work from home 4-5 hours per night at my own schedule. In the meantime, I found out I was pregnant with my second daughter. And just after finding out I was pregnant, my employer called all of the employees in for a meeting to tell us that he company had fallen on hard times and was folding. So I was out of a job, but as I was newly pregnant, it made very little sense to me to go out and find a new job. I decided to stay at home — again. And again, for me, this was the right decision. I loved being able to spend quality time with my kids and to take care of our household items.
Shortly after my second daughter was born, a long-time friend and previous co-worker, had an idea for a website. We talked about it extensively, and finally agreed that we could start our own company from home. Our website project morphed into an internet marketing company where we worked part-time, from home, as we wanted. It brought in some good money, but we never spent a whole lot of time on it. During those years, my love for internet marketing was ignited!
Despite the fact that I eventually went back to work full-time (if you haven’t read how that happened, click here), I never let go of my love for blogging, affiliate marketing and writing.
I’ve discovered that being at home with my kids and working on my own projects is my happy place! My goal is to build up my internet marketing world again, and to eventually quit my full-time gig (shhhh, don’t tell my boss!).
Whatever you choose to do – stay at home or work at home, or work part-time or full-time, the choice is yours.
No matter what your current life situation, you CAN change things around, and you can see that from my own personal story. Right now I am laser focused on bringing back my work-at-home world.
